For the last nine years, I have been the “behind-the-scenes” guy. I’ve been the marketing engine and the analytical brain helping entrepreneurs in over 30 industries build personal brands that position them as undisputed authorities. I even helped take my dad’s speaking career from $2k gigs to $50k stages.

I sat down with Rob Anspach on the E-Heroes Podcast (Episode 402) to talk about something a little more uncomfortable for me: stepping out of the shadows and building my own brand.

If you’ve ever felt like your marketing is blending in, or if you’re an introvert who hates the idea of being on camera (like me), this episode is for you. Here is a breakdown of what we discussed and how you can engineer your own identity to stand out.

The 3-Part Framework for a Personal Brand

During the episode, Rob and I got into the weeds of how I approach marketing. With my background in mechanical engineering, I naturally look at consumer behavior through an analytical lens... what Rob called "Human Engineering."

I broke down my simple, three-part formula for building a personal brand that actually converts:

Value + Character + Interests = Personal Brand

Here is where most entrepreneurs get it wrong: they nail the Value part. They have the case studies, the testimonials, and the expertise. But they completely ignore Character and Interests because they want to appear strictly "professional."

When you strip away your personality to look professional, you end up looking like every single one of your competitors. You have to inject your unique character traits and your personal interests to give people a reason to connect with you.

For me, that means talking about my love for racing RC cars, my background in motocross, and my obsession with marketing systems. It makes me a three-dimensional human, not just a service provider.

The Power of Polarization

To illustrate the importance of character, I shared a story on the podcast about marketing my dad, Steve Sims.

Early on, I was running ad campaigns for him, and we were facing massive pushback from the ad platforms because of his blunt, sarcastic, and rough-around-the-edges persona. As the marketer, I tried to pull back on the sarcasm to appease the platforms.

But I quickly realized a massive lesson: while the platforms hated it, the audience loved it.

The sarcasm created a highly polarized room. Half the people loved him, and half hated him. And that was exactly what we wanted. You have to lean into the character traits that make you unique, even if they repel some people, because those exact same traits will deeply attract your ideal clients.

The Trap of "Lazy Marketing" and AI

We also touched on a trend that has been driving me crazy lately: lazy marketing through AI.

I am a huge proponent of using AI for backend systems, SOPs, and transcribing long-form videos into blogs. But I am seeing more and more creators use AI-generated, faceless avatars to create their video content.

Personal branding is fundamentally about building trust. If you use an AI avatar to speak for you, the audience is left wondering, "Who are we trusting? The avatar or you?"

There is a reason the biggest players in the game like Alex Hormozi and Codie Sanchez are spending tens of thousands of dollars a month on human content teams. They understand that a genuine, human personal brand is a massive asset that AI cannot replicate.

Overcoming Perfectionism

The conversation wrapped up with my own current journey of stepping in front of the camera.

As a former behind-the-scenes engineer, I am a perfectionist. I hate publishing things with flaws. But I’ve had to adopt a new mantra: "Good is good enough." If I wait for a video to be perfect, it will never get published, and I won't be able to help the people I am meant to serve.
